The Sardinian Story by Francesca Scanacapra, Francesca Scanacapra

4.0

This is a very complex and emotional book that explores the deep impact that their relationship with the missing girl had on their lives and what they learned about themselves, family, love, and humanity through that relationship. I'm going to look for it. It's far from the light travel-oriented book I was expecting, but it's more rewarding than I expected, which makes it all the more rewarding. The best books are the ones that surprise you and teach you something unexpected and insightful.
I also particularly liked the book's setting, between a remote village in the High Apennines and the sunny coast of Sardinia. None of these locations are particularly familiar to me, but the author really succeeds in bringing each place to life, and the contrast between the two is quite striking. I found her portrayal of life and small-mindedness in a remote Italian village particularly appealing. The impact that imprisonment there had on Dante and his attitude is an integral part of this book, and the author explores this very effectively. Overall, I found this book to be very well put together and engaging, it made me think a lot and I felt like I had read something really worthwhile.
