‘But in hallowing King we have hollowed him.’ This line from the epilogue accurately sums up my own previous understanding of Martin Luther King. I knew the highlight reels, the easily marketable bits. Eig does an excellent job bringing the whole man to life, showcasing his remarkableness as well as his humanity, flaws and all. He delves into King’s struggle not just for racial equality but against the Vietnam War and poverty. This is a fascinating and well-researched biography.
