Ten Steps to Nanette: A Memoir Situation
by Hannah Gadsby
I really enjoy Gadsby’s comedy. After we chose this book for our book club, I sought out and watched all of their Netflix comedy specials; I wasn’t disappointed. They bring a unique perspective and insight into life and the world around them as a gay, queer autistic person from a small town in Australia. Their comedy isn’t what I’d describe as “fall on the floor laughing so I miss the next line,” kind of funny, but it definitely gives me a few chuckles and makes me think.
Most of this book was… fine. Entertaining in the same way their comedy is for me and fascinating to see how their autistic brain translated the “formative years” as the bulk of their story is contained in Chapter 3. Having worked with kids in elementary schools, I can really see the challenges that undiagnosed autism puts on kids. My heart breaks for them as they describe “checking out” a couple hours into their day, every day in high school, because it’s too much stimulation for their brain to handle, yet all their teachers report they’re not “living up to their potential.” The fact that smoking actually saves their life because it mutes all the strong smells that were so distracting puts things in perspective too. Really makes you sympathize with them, and just how painful those sensations must be in their daily life.
Audiobook is worth listening to, as it is read by Gadsby.
