Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents by Isabel Wilkerson

informative reflective medium-paced

5.0

This is the kind of book that I needed to sit with. The relationship between racism and caste, thinking of America through the lens of casteism, is something that takes longer than reading the book through just the once.

I did feel like this alternative perspective lent a depth to how we view the interactions and dynamics of all Americans. Like Wilkerson said, the context of caste gives us a multifaceted way of looking at our country’s past and present rather than a more binary approach.

Wilkerson did an amazing job breaking down her work and perspectives into pillars that truly seemed to addressed every aspect of American life. Reading the book felt like being able to take a bird’s eye view of the country that revealed a fuller picture. I can’t recommend the book enough.
