Oxherding Tale by Charles Johnson
4.75

The thing that grabbed me the most was Johnson’s style; in a novel that explores what it means to be a novel from the perspective of someone who’s subjectivity is so fraught (a slave born of a white woman and a black man), there are sentences so impressively erudite I had to take a moment to write them down for remembrance’s sake, and others that are so beautifully constructed I’d remember them regardless. By far my favourite reading from my American Literature class.
