Scythe & Sparrow by Brynne Weaver

3.5

I really loved the majority of this book but around the time Leander was reintroduced (about 3 hrs left in the audio), my attention started to wane. Brynne’s writing style continues to be entertaining, hilarious, and sexy, so this was undoubtedly a fun ride. If you can read this via audio, I definitely recommend! The narrators are just incredible and whew, those spicy scenes through Eric Nolan’s raspy lilt is 🥵🔥

*There are seven spicy scenes in S&S. I’ve included the pages & chapter titles (there are no chapter #s in this book) at the bottom of this review.*

Scythe & Sparrow follows Rose and Fionn. We know from both Butcher & Blackbird and Leather & Lark that Fionn had a woman living with him who had a broken leg and we got to know Rose a little through that lense. S&S goes back to the beginning of how Rose ended up with the broken leg and how she met Fionn from it.

I really loved Rose’s story; specifically how she was using her tarot cards and her “sparrow” name to help women in need. Her guilt over some help gone wrong leads to her taking the murders into her own hands, but she is MESSY about it. Fionn gets involved with cleanup and that sort of brings out the darker side he’s been trying to repress.

Rose and Fionn together were 👌👌 they were fun and a tad murdery, but like the B&B and L&L couples, they had good intentions 😜

As I mentioned earlier, my attention started to wane when there was about 3 hrs left in the book, aka when Leander appears on the scene. At this point, Rose & Fionn have FINALLY kissed (there was a no kissing rule prior to this) and declared their love for each other. So the natural progression of a serial unaliver romance story? They continue doing their stabby thing and ride off into their murdery little sunset together.. however, that’s not what happens. Leander, who we believed to be subdued after L&L, comes back to help with another messy murder and ropes Fionn into working for him in Croatia. Leander gives some nonsensical reason as to why he can’t tell Rose, Lochlan, or Rowan and Fionn is just like “k” 🤷🏻‍♀️

Naturally, Rose’s heart is broken but Fionn is like “I love you and will not stop.” He then proceeds to write her letters with an attached tarot card for 9 months, and when he comes back she just forgives him. It felt like Leander returning and the trip to Croatia was just a forced and unnecessary third act breakup. Honestly, without that entire part of plot, this book would have been 5 ⭐️s.

Special shout out to Barbara the raccoon and the Suture Sisters! Both were hilarious!

I’m sad to see the trilogy come to an end but loved the neat little tie up of the Kane brothers in the end. Can’t wait to see where Brynne takes us next!
