This Man
by Jodi Ellen Malpas
This book came highly recommended from several book friends, so despite my reluctance to read it, (any book cover that strikes similarities with FSOG gets a thumbs down from me) I delved into it with open arms. They immediately closed, crossing my chest as I puffed exasperatedly.
So, it takes a while to get going, a lot of books do, but Ava is promising, right? Successful career, older than the normal leading ladies, NOT a virgin. So, why then, when confronted with Jesse and his beauty that trumps all other beauties, does she become a blithering idiot? Through the course of the book she is more and more beguiled by Jesse to the point where she is unable to say a single thing to defend herself or to argue her point. She is far too complacent in the face of what can only be described as borderline domestic abuse.
Jesse and his "control issues" are piled on so thick that I can't concentrate on anything other than them. Controlling issues? Worlds biggest understatement. I don't know why so many books/authors/readers see this type of behaviour as a sexy trait. Protective, a little jealous, bossy? Yes, I'll take all three, but refusing to let someone pee when they want, demanding control of someone's wardrobe, and commencing a countdown to punishment if said someone doesn't do as they are told is not a quality I personally look for in a book boyfriend.
The storyline moves incredibly fast, which ordinarily I like, but when dealing with such difficult personalities I think some length could have added to the believability.
A few tweaks of character traits and it could have been really good and far more deserving of more stars. Less contradiction between thoughts and actions and it could have been amazing.
All that said, I didn't put it down. I want to believe that it's because as an avid book lover I will persevere in the face of fairness, but, in all honesty, I kept reading for the smut. The smut is HOT. It tramples all over other smut. Her feelings and reactions are so well described that I can almost overlook the premature anal session. Seriously? When he's that big?
I'll end on that note.
