Very much a product of its time, but also a book I'm definitely planning on rereading and analysing deeply. The best way to summarise it is in E.M. Forster's own words: " A happy ending was imperative. I shouldn’t have bothered to write otherwise. I was determined that in fiction anyway two men should fall in love and remain in it for the ever and ever that fiction allows." The main characters have their fair share of troubles, but the ending is hopeful.
