i have no idea what it is about KR’s books that make them so difficult to rate for me???

the dark olympus world itself is just so strange and weird but also super interesting. like you get sucked into the intense power-madness and political maneuvering of the thirteen and their children and almost forget that this isn’t a traditional retelling. and then the MC wakes up from a hangover and remarks on the tylenol and gatorade their partner left on the nightstand and go, “oh yeah, gatorade exists in this world”. in some ways moments like that can be jarring and momentarily take me right out of the story, but i also love the very modern spin on the greek pantheon. it’s different from anything i’ve seen done before, regardless of some choppy worldbuilding and elements that maybe don’t make a Ton of sense. but KR’s willingness to turn myths on their heads and do such wild things with her books honestly just gives me cause to admire her!!

i think the real draw of her books for me, though, is the way she handles her characters and the dynamics between each of them. i come to KR for characters that are real and honest and fiercely champion themselves, which there definitely needs to be more of in the genre. oh, and for the spice of course, which this book has plenty of. the sex scenes in KR’s books are honestly always great— her characters most often have very palpable chemistry and the spicy parts themselves are always driven first and foremost by communication and consent, which is something i appreciate and enjoy whenever i pick up one of her books.

all in all this was a very fun and pretty action-packed read from KR. i loved the characters— psyche’s cleverness and hard-won confidence in herself were amazing, and the broody longing we get from eros was just *chef’s kiss*.

side note: someone give eros a hug right now this man has absolutely no self esteem and it made me SO SAD
