This book was hard. A great mystery. But, as a woman, I didn’t know that Lawhon’s storytelling would be as much of a reaction. The way the women are treated in any historical fiction makes me sad, but reading this story of Martha Ballard and how much of a 1700s baddie she was a teetering between amazing and enraging and depressing. I loved the justice finally served but I also found myself wanting the book cut in half to just get to the resolution faster bc of all the shitty treatment of the female characters, especially Rebecca. Fantastic read for sure.
