The Prince
by Niccolò Machiavelli
Macchiavelli seems to fit the niche of advisor to local elites, like Confucius (孔子) or Mencious (亞聖). But the culture of 15th and 16th century Italy seems desperately bloody and fragile by contrast with 4th-6th century BCE China. Perhaps the flood plains and water-loving rice kept the peace, whereas wheat crops fail with too much or too little rain.
The basic message is might makes right and Macchiavelli's world was red in tooth and claw. It's ironic that this blood bath of a culture in Latin Europe assumed the same of the cultures just coming into contact across the ocean, but 14th-16th century ce Mediterranean Europe was far more brutal and far less stable as a collection of societies.
