The Last Séance
by Agatha Christie
Such a deeply uneven collection. Christie is at her best when setting up mysteries to be explained. The strong stories in this book are the ones where there ultimately IS an explanation — a human hand playing a supernatural trick. The ones where she dabbles in the inexplicable (ancient magic, possessed dolls, a man in a cat’s body???) seem like bad rip offs of Poe or The Twilight Zone.
