I’ve been loving this series of hockey players! They all have their brokenness which is overcome with the help of the women they love. They are all close friends, who have given each other mutual support in times of need. The youngest and most broken one is Emerson, addicted to cocaine and booze, lost his best friend who was helping him when he was too drunk to drive, had a twin sister who suffered along with him through his travails. He lost a lot but he overcame his addictions and is on his way back to the person he should always have been.
When Emerson was in college, he was cocky, a complete narcissist, show off and heart of the party. His life was described all in excesses, lots of women, lots of booze, lots of drugs, all fun, fun, fun. Until one day, his best friend had to come pick him up from a bar and on the way home, they had an accident. His best friend Ian dies and all Emerson had were a couple of stitches. Guilt was a hard trip for Emerson, particularly when everyone, including Ian’s girlfriend, turned his back on him...
Emerson fell in love with Sofia at first sight, but she only had eyes for Ian. In a way, it was right. A girl with lots of personality and lots of possibilities had to be with Ian, who was so good and deserved everything. So Emerson accepted his fate of being third wheel in their life and looking at Sofia from afar.
Fast forward four years, Emerson is in the NFL, part of the Chicago Fury hockey team. He’s working hard at his comeback from a disastrous career, steeped in cocaine addiction, after a hard rehab, determined to turn his life around, in honor of Ian’s memory. As penance, he’s coaching a little boy’s hockey team during the off season, and as serendipity goes, one of his new pupils turns out to be Ian’s son, Ezequiel. As soon as Emerson met Z, he recognized his talent. Later on, when he meets Sofia and realized that Z is Ian’s son, he falls in love for the second time, this time with a little boy. There were times that Sofia suspected Emerson liked Z more than her! For Sofia, watching her quiet and withdrawn child thrive under the attention of the man who was his father’s best friend was bittersweet but welcome. What mother is not happy to see her child blossom and be happy?
Likewise, a love is being born between Sofia and Emerson, but Sofia is afraid. She suffered a lot, pregnant when she lost Ian, studying and working, raising her son mostly alone, although with the help of her parents and Ian’s parents. For a single mother who works, guilt is ever present, wondering if the time dedicated to her child is enough. Emerson came into their lives and gave that quality of time to make them happy but there are still clouds in their horizon.
I loved this story, loved Emerson and Sofia. Sofia’s heritage is Spanish and I loved all the phrases from my upbringing, like the “chanclas” being an weapon of mass destruction, “I am like a cucaracha, impossible to kill”, and all the loving phrases that Sofia’s grandmother showered on Emerson. I loved how giving Emerson was, working for the happiness of Z and Sofia, even if he has to go without. For a man who was deemed a screw up, he sure grew up to be a formidable person. Wonderful story!
