Baker's Magic by Diane Zahler

4.0

Cute fun kid adventure. Nothing scary. Very wholesome. Enjoyable and would be fun to read aloud to the kid.

Determinedly independent pre-teen orphan girl uses cunning and magic to bake her kingdom to freedom. Pirates, royalty, friendship, trees, an evil mage, and lots of tasty confections.

This is one of those books that pretends to be feminist, but actually contains a ton of old gender role stereotypes that are laughed off. It's because the story is set pre industrial, but some of the complacency, benevolent paternalism, and taunts might annoy some readers.

There's also a few sections in the middle of the book that are resolved way too quickly and conveniently to be believable. It's fine, but I would have loved to see the author tease the discovery of the island out in another chapter or two.
