A Ghoul's Kiss by J.M. Stoneback
4.0
4 Stars
A Ghoul’s Kiss is the first book in the Ghoul Kisses series by J.M Stoneback. This is an incredibly good paranormal romance with action, intrigue, drama, angst, magic, and supernatural creatures such as Ghouls, Vampire’s, Trolls, Werewolves Witches and Warlocks. I loved reading this book- it’s the first time I have read anything by this author, and have since added Ms. Stoneback to my one-click author list- because I feel that I am going to love anything she writes.
When I read the blurb, I was a little dubious about having a Ghoul as my potential new book boyfriend. I had always associated ghouls with ugliness and decay. But Ms. Stoneback proved me wrong, Eric is completely sexy and very swoon-worthy…. and I love how she put her own twist on all the supernatural creatures that we all know so well.
Sarah Clemons is an Oncologist who’s out celebrating a fantastic new job opportunity. But there is a situation that leaves Sarah unconscious and injured. Lucky for her, Eric discovers her and takes her back to his home to rest and recuperate. She wakes up in a strange home with a very sexy and intense man who seems determined to keep her there. Sarah doesn’t know if she can, or should trust him. But as the days pass she feels a deep bond developing between them.
Eric Faye is a king of the Ghoul’s, and would usually avoid interacting with humans, but there is something about Sarah that resonates with him on a deeper level. Against his better judgement, he takes her back to his home and organised a doctor to come to treat her. He knows that there is more to her situation and is determined to get to the bottom of it, and protect her. He has been searching for the Zenith Book and is desperate to find it, as he needs it to help save his people. His fascination with Sarah grows when he discovers that she has the key that unlocks the book. Now he needs her help to find it. To find out what happens in this exciting story, you really will need to read it for yourself. I’m sure you’ll love it just as much as I did.
I loved the story, I was enthralled and couldn’t put it down. I read the whole book in a few hours- devouring my way through the chapters to discover what was happening. I got to the end and wanted the next book- YESTERDAY.
But there were a few issues that I feel I need to mention- for example; the dialogue seemed a little forced and stilted in places; the first few chapters were a little slow, but the last quarter of the book felt a little rushed; then there were little things like- Sarah seeing someone executed in front of her and the next minute she’s agreeing to dinner plans??? Or…. one of the characters was in a coma for two weeks, wakes up and is released by the Doctor within an hour of consciousness??? Or…. Sarah had just got this fantastic job opportunity that she’s very excited about, and was due to start the morning after her celebration, but her job and/or not turning up for work, or anything more about her working as a doctor at the University of Washington Medical Centre is never mentioned again???................ These issues didn’t detract from my overall enjoyment of the book, but if these small things were dealt with, the story would be lifted to a whole new, spellbinding level of enjoyment.
I loved the characters, they were unique, complex, well-crafted, fully realised and likable. Eric is dreamy, a perfect book boyfriend. I wanted to know so much more about him, more detail about his homeland and the circumstances that brought the ghouls to the human world, etc. I hope we find out more in the next book. Sarah completely frustrated me at times. There were more than a few occasions where he acted so brattishly that I just had to shake my head. She’d act jealous of Eric getting any attention from other females, but push him away constantly- I was yelling ‘Make up your mind” at my kindle. Even so, I did think she and Eric were perfect for each other.
The story ended leaving me with quite a few unanswered questions, which I hope will be covered in the next book. I really need to know what happens and can’t wait to get my hands on book two.
This story sets this series off to a great start.
Thank you, Ms. Stoneback!
