The Wife Before by Shanora Williams

This has been on my TBR for a long time and I'm glad I finally read it! It ended up just being an average read for me, which was kind of disappointing because the bones of the story were actually really good. The writing was just a little too lackluster for me to ever really get into it. The plot was solid and interesting, but the use of the journals was a little too heavy at times. Ultimately, I think the characters were just a little too flat and the writing felt the same. There was a lot of telling the reader what was going on and it was just one foot in front of the other, leading us to the ending. I really could have used a little more suspense and atmosphere to really hook me, but still a very readable book!

I listened to this as an audiobook and the narrator was also fairy dry. Her style really wasn't my favorite but I really wanted to read this one so I kept going. It was a little too stiff of a performance for my personal tastes so that didn't help the book get a leg up in performance.
