Rereading this book after 2 years or so, I didn’t remember much. I only remembered that I loved it then. After reading it again, I was reminded of the reasons why. I love how the magic is building and evolving, and we still do not know how the Gods work or how the magic is becoming alive. I still will love the MMC (Hawke and/or Casteel) no matter what he does or how many people will die.

The whole pretending thing was what I remembered about this story, and I still hated it. I understood why it was necessary for Poppy and Casteel, but it was still frustrating to read about.
I hated Poppy and her inner turmoil about loving him. It was annoying. She loved him from the beginning but constantly kept denying it to herself. And it didn’t feel like it was because of fear or morality. It felt like stubborn pride. Regardless of the actions that were done to her, it felt excessive. It made the story so much longer than it had to be.

Compared to the first book, this book was much longer (by about 2oo or so pages). Throughout the story, most chapter beginnings were just continuations of the same scene, which was super annoying. I felt like it could have been just one scene, and a new chapter would be different, and some were. It didn't feel consistent. However, I do not know how to write a book. Maybe I am missing the big picture of it all.

It was far better than the first one, I think the reason why was there were more details to give.
I loved it nonetheless. It still is part of my favorite series.
