A lot happens in She Who Became the Sun, but very little changes.
When the stakes feel too low, and connecting with the characters and their unexplainable ambitions is impossible (what does wanting “greatness” even mean, and is that alone enough to justify entire character arcs and decisions?), the story needs a bigger purpose to move forward, a stronger motivation to keep me on the edge of my seat. I found myself caring very little about what would happen to the main characters, to the point of deciding not to read the second book in the series.
The parallels between the two main characters were well done, however, and the writing was immersive, even if the story never truly grabbed me.
