Fearless King by Maya Hughes
5.0
Fearless King is a slow burn, brother's best friend romance and the fourth book in the Kings of Rittenhouse series. The series is about five guys who played for the same hockey team in high school, but who all find their HEA when they go off to college and the NHL. I love these boys, their strong bond, and the women who will become their queens.
Ford and Liv are my favourite couple from this series and their book lived up to every single one of my expectations. The heartache, the drama, the emotion, it was also so perfect!
Ford is the strong and silent type, some who is loyal to a fault. So, when he starts developing feelings for his best friend Colm’s younger sister Liv, he begins to feel so guilty, especially as their friendship is already strained. But when they kiss at Mak and Declan’s wedding, Ford distances himself instantly, because he knows if Colm finds out, he’ll go crazy. A year later, Liv is still hurt by how Ford has avoided her since, especially as she used to think of him as one of her closest friends. Under growing pressure from her brother’s expectations, and her own, for med school, she’s burning out and begins pulling away from Colm. Colm asks Ford to keep an eye on her, and he agrees, but his restraint is already slipping when it comes to his feelings. Ford and Liv make up and begin spending time together, opening up parts of themselves they’ve hidden from everyone else. The tension grows, and they finally give in to their feelings, agreeing to keep it a secret from the group. But as their relationship goes from strength to strength, they both know their hiding something major from someone important to them both, Colm. How will Colm react? Will Liv follow her own dreams, and will Ford and Liv make it as a couple?
Ford, honestly, I knew from the beginning he was going to be my favourite King. His past meant that he always tried to do what was best, what he thought was right, but kept secrets to keep others from getting hurt, which caused problems when they finally came out. I admired his ability to admit when he was wrong though, but also to stand up for himself, because the tension with Colm was partially his fault, but not completely, although I knew from the start that what Colm was accusing him of, Ford would have never done intentionally, he’s not that kind of guy. When it came to Liv, he tried his best to keep a distance, but his feelings were too strong, and nothing, not even Colm, was going to stop him from making her his.
Liv was my favourite heroine, her personality and feistiness meant she made Ford work for it when he reappeared in her life. I loved how she stuck with the other thing she loved to do, even though it was wearing her out, because it was the only thing that felt like she was living, not surviving. My heart broke when she opened up to Ford about the pressure her parent’s legacy put her under, the hurt she went through after they passed, and how all she wanted from Colm was a brother, not a parent. Ford helped her to realise what she truly wanted in life, there were no expectations around him, she could be herself and that’s what made her truly happy.
As a couple, I adored their banter and how they just seemed to click. They worked so well together, pushing each other in different ways, and they were so hot together too. The video wasn’t great, but I am so glad everything resolved itself in the end.
Every time I read series like this, I am overwhelmed by the group dynamic, I love the banter, the wit and how they can just be there for one another always. As the girls are introduced to the group throughout the series, it doesn’t change, they are more like brothers than friends.
Overall, Fearless King is my favourite of the series, the emotions it brought out of me, I found myself holding back tears at how both Ford and Liv felt. I am slightly reluctant to read Colm’s book next, because he definitely didn’t cast himself in a very good light throughout this book, but I am sure Maya has some form of redemption in store for him that will make me fall for his charm too! I would highly recommend Fearless King!
