Long Black Veil: A Novel by Jennifer Finney Boylan

4.0

I was completely drawn in by this story. What happened in the ruins of Eastern State Penitentiary on that night so long ago? Six college friends, a professor, and a little boy are locked in, and one of them doesn't come out. Boylan keeps us guessing who the victim is for a bit, but when it is revealed, and we get to know the players in the present, the story moves right along. However, I was disappointed in the ending. The finale takes place back in the Penitentiary, which is now open to tourists, during a confusing night of mistaken identities and cosplay on the part of the tourists. Ultimately, it all comes right, though. Entertaining and readable, with shifts in time and point of view that I found easy to follow.
