Grave Mercy by Robin LaFevers

3.0

Call this a solid 3.4. I liked it a lot once I got into it, but I had to take it on faith for a while. I would have loved a “kid going through Death’s school” story, but that’s not what I got. The lengthy exposition felt like it would have been the best part of the story. It did get better - I did enjoy Ismae’s character growth, and Duval as well. But there isn’t a ton of depth yet. It’s a series though, so I’ll get that chance. I sure hope we get a prequel that’s all focused on the school, though!!
