The Deep by Nick Cutter
4.0

This book was well on its way to being a five-star masterpiece of horror. The atmosphere, the gore, the tension, the mystery. All coming together to make a perfectly poisonous stew. And then.... The ending. As a long-time fan of horror, it's not like I'm surprised to read another story where the ending soured an otherwise perfectly good book.
My main gripe lies with the fact that there's somehow this mysterious society of Eldritch beings that has been following Luke and his family for generations and that they are responsible for everything awful that has happened in Luke's life. That he was some sort of experiment. Another smaller but not less significant gripe is how Clayton's character turned out. Robbed of any nuance. He's evil. He's aloof. He's damaged. But also he's a murderer and that's not okay even though he did murder his mother who was sexually abusing him. But he didn't do for good reasons?????
