Wow this poetry collection flew by and I already want to read it again and highlight verses!! Clint Smith is truly a prolific writer whether it's in prose or poetry. As I've talked to more friends about parenthood, I've listened to friends who are excited to see how a child views the world through new eyes and I've listened to friends worry about raising kids in a tough political climate that may not accept their kids. Clint captured these joys and worries perfectly in this book as he shares poems about becoming a parent and all it entails.

By far, the funniest poem of the book was about Zoom preschool. But the most heartbreaking part was by far that about school shootings and Hurricane Katrina. I think everyone will see themselves in this collection and everyone will learn something about perspective from this collection. Above Ground will make you laugh, it will make you sad and most importantly, it will make you think.
