The Viral Underclass: The Human Toll When Inequality and Disease Collide by Steven W. Thrasher

challenging dark emotional informative reflective sad tense medium-paced

5.0

At the end of this book, turning the final line of the epilogue into the afterward, I found myself openly weeping.

If you only listened to the audiobook, you rob yourself (the afterword was added later so not in the audiobook) of the validating anger and grief needed and loss to sit with where we are today, in 2024, and the leaders that got us here.

This may be one of the most incredible books I have ever read. I found myself saying “Oh my god.” out loud over and over and connecting dots I had never considered together before.

Thrasher’s narrative style makes you feel as though he’s just across the table having a passionate conversation with you that compels you to want to be more, to do more.

I hope especially more people in our shared LGBTQ community read this book and really. I am just astounded and feel so less alone thanks to this author.
