I really enjoyed Zahra's Paradise by Amir & Khalil. The story is heart stopping, the graphics detailed, the language beautifully poetic - and they all meld together so perfectly. The book also contains an extensive glossary and afterwards section.

You do not have to be an expert on the recent, or past, political upheavals and demonstrations in Iran to read this book and grasp what it is about. If you're a little uncertain of your knowledge level, start by looking over the information contained at the back of the book first - it's not overly academic and will bring you up to speed on the key points in no time.

Not sure if it's the right book for you? You can read some samples of it on the book's website: http://www.zahrasparadise.com/

You can also watch a short (9min) Amnesty International interview with Amir here: http://youtu.be/VaYBT7YCO70

I willingly admit the mother's soliloquy at the very end of the story brought me to tears (but her best friend Miriam will restore your smile - that's what best friends do, right?).

If you enjoy graphic novels, and have an interest in the cultural and political developments in the Middle East, you should find this book worthy of your time - I most certainly did.
