Every Step She Takes by Alison Cochrun is a sapphic romance with self-discovery. Into her thirties and having no interest in men, Sadie begins questioning her sexuality. When her sister breaks her toe and is unable to complete the Caminho/Camino de Santiago through Portugal and Spain, Sadie offers to go in her place. Along the Camino, she bonds with her queer walking group and reflects on her sexuality and future. She also meets Mal, and their romance becomes the centre of the book.
I loved this book. Before requesting it from NetGalley, I knew I was going to like it because I've always enjoyed Alison Cochrun's book. But I didn't expect to love it as much as I do! Without a doubt, this book is in my top three for this year. I love Alison Cochrun's relationship building, not only between the main characters but between all the characters. I feel connected to everyone who was in Sadie and Mal's Camino group even though they weren't central to the plot. Stefano? Ari? Ro? Inez? All my favourites – and all queer if you're searching for a fully queer cast. 1,000,000% recommended!
This book has emotion, self-reflection, literal journeying and figurative journeying, family, friends, found family, trans, queer, asexual, nonbinary... It has everything I want in a romance. I even almost cried at the ending because it was so beautiful and supportive. Just a fantastic book in all ways. And now I'm looking into Camino options...
I will be buying this book for myself in the future! It's going straight on my StoryGraph favourites shelf. It's going to stick with me for a long time.
Thank you to Atria Books and Alison Cochrun for this amazing ARC!
