Ash Princess by Laura Sebastian
3.0

“We are not defined by the things we do in order to survive. We do not apologize for them. Maybe they have broken you, but you are a sharper weapon because of it. And it is time to strike.”

Ash Princess is, while enjoyable enough, really typical YA fantasy. There's nothing terrible about it, but nothing outstanding either. I expected more from the Theodosia, and maybe I'll get it in the sequel, but the MC just wasn't as intelligent and manipulative of her enemies as I hoped she would be. There was a love triangle and I'm still not 100% on board of either. Both are kind of likeable, but... don't know who I prefer the MC with. The plot was mostly about captive princess starting to rebel against the one dimensional villain and finding her own strength, very little to no actual magic and some castle intrigue.

“This is the only world she knows, and though it’s a nightmare to me, it’s a world she is at home in.

I suppose it’s easy to be at home in a world where you are on top. It’s easy not to notice those whose backs you stand on to stay there. One doesn’t even see them.”

This book is basically the definition of entertaining, but not amazing. It was just kinda run of the mill. Something i've seen many times before in other YA books.

“And I promise myself that one day I will watch them all burn.”
