The Family Clause by Jonas Hassen Khemiri

3.0

Meh. I really wanted to love this book, but ultimately, I didn’t. The book is meant to be fast paced and follows the lives of a son, a daughter, a grandfather, and some grandchildren (aged 1 year, and 4 years)—all of whom are nameless.

Although I didn’t enjoy this book, I appreciated it for what it’s trying to do. I read it as a valuable exercise in POV (it’s a series of close thirds written in close past tense) characterization (how to create real characters through increased specificity over time). And though I love this writer and his work that I’ve read elsewhere, I don’t recommend this book.
