Mary Karr is an incredible writer. Her use of the English language and ability to describe things is impressive. That said, it is this very talent that sometimes created a distance between author and reader for me. Too many words, too many descriptions. I would find myself engaged and then detached throughout. I also found the book too long overall. Lastly, though her traumatic response to her mother, struggle with drinking and reactions to her husband were understandable, her tone landed more on the side of anger than vulnerability, which sometimes made it hard to connect.
