Oh, Harry, my dear book boyfriend, how I’ve missed you. Our time apart was rough, but we are finally together again.

Honestly, lovelies, I put off reading this book for so long because I was scared it wouldn’t even be able to touch [b:Storm Front|47212|Storm Front (The Dresden Files, #1)|Jim Butcher|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1572991273l/47212._SY75_.jpg|1137060]. I didn’t think it would even remotely be able to come close to its immaculateness.

Well, low and behold, I was wrong. I deeply apologize, Mr. Butcher.

This book wasn’t immaculate, but it was pretty damn close.

While the first book had me in more of a death grip. I did thoroughly enjoy this one too. I wouldn’t say I obsessed over it like I did with book number one, but this story did suck me in. I enjoyed the mix of supernatural characters in this story. It was also fun revisiting some of the key players from the start of the series.

Harry Dresden, the magic, the mystery, the creatures—it all entertained me once more.

I figured out the twist in this one at about the half way mark but still enjoyed it. It was perfectly placed and revealed at exactly the right time within the overall plot.

We are given just enough to want to continue the series and know more. Butcher lets us find out just enough about something before completely shifting away from it. Little hints are dropped here and there that you can tell will develop more later on in the story arc and keep us in the mindset of wanting to read the next book.

Honestly, hats off to Jim Butcher; so brilliant and well done on his part.

Fighting Susan Rodriguez for putting her grubby hands on my man was not on my 2024 bingo card (well, maybe it was), but here we are. If I have to fight for my man, I will. Alas, hands might have to be thrown, so square up, Susie! *removes earrings*

Honestly, Susan doesn’t even deserve Harry. She isn’t a ride-or-die like me. If Harry called and he needed my help, I’d be there. I wouldn’t be a wishy-washy little bitch about it. You want to go fight things from the Nevernever, babe? I’m there, no questions asked.

The amount of times I yelled, "FUCKING SUSAN!" while reading this book was astronomical; just ask my husband.

My Gods, look at me holding a grudge with a literal fictional woman.

I’m clearly losing my mind.

Despite now knowing that being a fictional Wizards girlfriend can only lead to bad outcomes, I still can’t help myself. My love for Harry runs too deep for rational thinking. Our soul-gazing would be intense. I’m just as fucked up in the head as he is.

The more we find out about Dresden, the more we realize that, despite being rather cynical and expecting the worst out of life, he is just a lonely man who wants friends. He just wants a relationship he can hold on to. He wants people in his life that won’t abandon him when times get hard.

He really just wants to know who he is, where he came from, and what made him end up being the person and adult he is today.

I think in some sort of way we can all relate to that part of him, and that makes him just that much more endearing to the readers. Myself, obviously included. Butcher somehow managed to make Harry Dresden a fictional wizard that is still very much a typical human being. He has made him blur the line between fantasy and reality, and I must say that I’m very impressed by that.

This book suffered from the slight “sophomore slump” but was still a captivating read.

I’m looking forward to continuing this series. I’m sure Jim Butcher and Harry Dresden have a whole lot more in store for us. I can’t wait to see what it is.

TLDR: A WONDERFUL SECOND BOOK IN THIS SERIES! KEEPS THE STORY FLOWING NICELY! MAKES YOU WANT TO CONTINUE ON WITH THE NEXT BOOK!

As always, please remember that reading is subjective, and that’s what makes it so great.
