The Sandman #2: Imperfect Hosts by Neil Gaiman

2.0

This might be a strange reason to give 2 stars, but the constant uhs and umms are annoying, and for me it tore me away from the story. I found myself trying to skip those parts. "You, UH, P-Promise it isn't going to, HMMM, explode?" -- I'm not a fan of this kind of writing to show a character is nervous, shaky, inarticulate, or whatever else the author could be trying to convey, but I get frustrated every time I have to read something like this. In prose I prefer "he said shakily", or "he nervously said", etc.

There are also other parts I found confusing:

Am I supposed to know who Diana, Mary, Florence and candy are? Is it a dated reference? Is it a set up for later?

*edit* I found this. The names are a mix of references. From Irish, Greek, and Roman mythology. And also one that is a reference to the Supremes R&B group.

I feel like what is being done here is the three witches are being clever and trying to confuse dream, but all that is happening is that the reader--in my case--feels like they are missing something unless they are steeped in multiple mythologies and cultural references.

Overall I'm still not really that invested in the story. I usually add and review these as the volumed collections, but after reading the first two issues my interest is going down, rather than up, so I decided to review them individually in case I don't make it through the whole first volume.
