Wow. Wow wow wow wow wow. This is the first thing I’ve read by Kelly Barnhill, and I now want to go and read everything she’s ever written. This story is enchanting, plain and simple. The writing style, the story, the characters—all beautiful and magical and heartbreaking and nuanced in a way children’s literature doesn’t always bother with. No wonder this won the Newbury.
