plutokm 's review for:
The Golden Compass
by Philip Pullman
fire
protagonist just annoyed me at the end with how easily she got over the death of her best friend to embark on the next adventure.. mr philip was rushing to set up for that second book deal he got. lyra also seems to sleep for the majority of the second half, and parts of the plot are grossly over-explained.
still a v fun book! i can see more clearly on this reread as an adult why this was critiqued as being anti-christian, although i feel it's more anticlerical. for something marketed to children, this book was much more violent than i remembered, and explored complex themes that made it entertaining enough for me to read nonstop for 2 days
