The Conference of the Birds by Ransom Riggs
3.0

This book was.... disappointing.

I loved the original three books in the Miss Peregrine's Peculiar Children series, so when I heard that there would be three more, I was ecstatic. Two books in, however, and I am seriously wishing the story had stopped after Library of Souls.

The Conference of the Birds is definitely suffering from Middle Book Syndrome. I really loved seeing all of my favorite characters again, but was severely disappointed when the story felt rushed. That's not to say that there wasn't anything going on, because there was, but we never really got any resolutions before jumping into the next plot point. It made things confusing and I had trouble following along (which explains why I had so much trouble remembering what happened in the previous books). This book in particular didn't even focus on the peculiar abilities of the characters. Even Jacob, the main character and the one who—arguably—has the most interesting ability, didn't get to see much action. I also had difficultly believing/enjoying the romance because feelings progressed way too fast and I felt like I didn't get to enjoy the characters individually or get to see their feelings develop properly before they were together.

Overall, this book gave me the feeling that I was running in circles and getting nowhere. I hate being so disappointing by a series that I love and feel a bit underwhelmed at the prospect of yet another book. Hopefully this time it really is the final one in the series and we can get an official conclusion.
