Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice

medium-paced

4.0

OH HELL YEAH. Bring on all the queer-coded classics. I can see why this made such a literary impact in the mid 70s - this shit is wild for that time. It’s always interesting reading the source material (maybe the more accurate phrase would be original inspiration?) for a slew of other books published since. I’m sure she did not ‘invent’ the interview storytelling style but I am sure this book paved some of the way for now-ubiquitous titles written similarly, like The Name of the Wind, to be as successful as they are.

I loved the gothic atmosphere, small bits of religious philosophy that popped up here and there, and the sensuality of these characters’ relationships. I say sensual, or maybe romantic, because it’s not sexy or sex driven where it could easily turn to. It leans into the classic seductive nature of vampire lore without making it rapey- thank goodness.
