I think it's a bit unfair to write a standalone book, and then make the companion story to that one multi-book. Especially when this book didn't need to be anywhere near as long. It was so slow. While the revelations about the Laurent family were nice and gothic horror-y, they were too long coming. I'll admit that while I knew what the cliffhanger was, I still liked the way it was delivered in the text. Having said that, I am not invested enough in the follow-on to be waiting for the next book.
Graphic: Body horror, Death, Blood, and Medical trauma
Moderate: Sexual content, Violence, Murder, Fire/Fire injury, Abandonment, and Alcohol
Minor: Rape and Pregnancy
