Hmm, this book is so hard to review.
At times, I was enamored with it. The best thing about both Green brothers' writing is that it is always more about ideas than plot or even characters. Maybe this is the worst thing for some people, but it is the best thing for me. And, man, were these ideas interesting. It was cool to just sort of think about fame and get an inside look at how fake and confusing and complex it is. It was also cool to think about humanity, especially from an outside view.
But, and this is a big but, Hank is sort of uncomfortably forward in his views in this book. They didn't come across as subtle at all. It was obvious to me what his views on politics and internet fame are. I think part of this was because it is his debut. The writing could be sort of clumsy, itself, at times, so I can understand that he didn't quite know how to weave his message in a more quiet way. But, part of it seemed intentional, especially as April, who appeared to be drawn a lot from Hank, was so pigheaded about her views.
Soooo, I would recommend. I guess. Unless, you hate politics or very flawed protagonists. And, mostly, I'm excited to see what Hank writes in the future.
