it’s hard to rate this, as my main problem with this book wasn’t with the poems but with the organization. I feel that grouping any poems by subject matter once the poet has passed away is a disservice to the poet, as it’s just speculating as to what the meaning was. Dickinson’s work is often analyzed to death & from that we get this sort of skewed view of what all of her work is about. I also didn’t like that the poems didn’t have numbers attached so that we could get a feel for how late or early in her life Dickinson was writing these poems.

that all being said, I enjoyed taking a trip through Dickinson’s writing. it was exactly what one has grown to expect from her but also so much more. I have a much greater appreciation for her work after reading so much of it.

I’m settling on 3.5 for the writing combined with my distaste for the organization.
