Book one could be a standalone, but book two really added to the story! I don’t feel like you need books 3, 4, or 5, if you don’t feel like reading them. The nice thing about this series is that each book adds to the last, but you don’t have any cliffhangers, so they are pretty self contained! 

The Graphic Audio version of this audiobook is a MUST! It really added to the book and I don’t know how I will go back to just one person voicing all the characters after this.
