Squirrel Meets World by Shannon Hale, Dean Hale

3.0

Doreen Green, Squirrel Girl, is the hero we all need. In this children's book, Doreen, age 14, has just moved to a new town and started a new school. All her life, she's had to hide her squirrel tail and powers of speed and strength. But something evil is taking place in her new home, and it's up to Doreen to save the day and connect with her super-hero identity.

This book is very, very silly. The army of squirrels, the teenage super villain, the perpetually kidnapped babies, are all ridiculous. But it's not the plot that makes this book: it's Doreen herself, her faith in other people, her endless optimism, her determination and her courage. If you were charmed by her in her comics, you'll be charmed by her here too: as a teenager, she's just as delightful. She's also accompanied by her new best friend, hard-of-hearing Ana SofĂa, a teenage sleuth, and the toughest squirrel in the world, Tippy-toe.

A downside to this book might be that it requires some knowledge of the Marvel universe: everyone from She-Hulk to Rocket the racoon have their own bit-parts. The plot is also chaotic, and the fight scenes too long drawn out. But overall, it's wildly enjoyable, and I would recommend it to anyone who want to know Doreen. Her tireless courage and kindness make her one of my heroes.
