The Murder House by David Ellis, James Patterson

2.0

Ehh....I'm sure that anything less that a stellar review of this bestselling author will not be taken lightly by his hard core fans.

However, I must say that this was my first Patterson book....and I'm not too anxious to go out and read another. It was "co written" (air quotes because I wonder how much of Patterson's books are actually written by him? The man sure does put out a lot of books...)

This is a plot driven novel. It's a thriller. A page turner. If that's all you need from a book, read this and you will be satisfied.

What it is not however is a novel that contains well developed characters, and that was enough to stop my reading and make me grumble with frustration. The best example is the protagonist, Jenna Rose Murphy, police officer.

Murphy finds herself as an officer in South Hampton PD after being forced off the force in NYPD. There is a lot (a lot) of repetition around the fact the she loves her job, she cannot imagine being anything but a cop. It is the only thing she loves, all of her relationships are failed because she loves her job. So, when something bad happens it's totally logical that she would go against all of her training and professionalism to risk her job to do things like break into people's homes with the intent of killing them? Lie under oath in court? Yeah. I wasn't buying it. I think we are meant to believe she is a renegade cop who will do whatever is needed for justice....but it its wasn't written that well in my opinion.
