Ace by Angela Chen

informative inspiring reflective medium-paced

5.0

This book was eyeopening to me for many reasons. I've not had the chance to study much about gender and sex in school, and have just begun to explore the topic more in my reading. This book was a great place to start, both for its subject matter and analysis. I have often thought about asexuality and how it might apply to myself, yet I've never really looked into it more deeply, for some reason. I'm very happy I read this book, as it provided a lot of clarity for me. Chen discusses the history of the current asexuality movement and introduces many important topics, terms, and battles going on within the ace community. These more informative moments and analyses are balanced with personal stories from the many individuals that Chen spoke to while working on this book. I really appreciated reading these stories as they provided a beautiful depth to what the ace experience can be. Chen also champions inclusivity and acceptance in her writing, which was really lovely to read. Her tone is very supportive and calm throughout, and I really appreciated that in my reading experience.

If you're at all interested in issues of sexuality and gender, or interested in learning more about asexuality, then this is a great book to begin with.
