The House on Maple Street by Heidi Slowinski
2.0
This book was definitely not for me. I almost DNFed twice and probably would not have finished it if it were any longer. I found myself skipping pages and skimming just to get through this.
Pros:
-Interesting concept. I think that when it’s done well, the story being written by one of the characters can make for a good book.
-The book is a very quick read.
-Diverse characters
Cons:
-The main character, Hillary is not the most perceptive. By the second encounter with Robert, I knew that he was a ghost. With the first encounter, I was wondering why he was talking strangely (and then it clicked).
-How do you meet a person TWICE and decide that you’re head over heels obsessed with them? It was weird.
-I really struggled to connect in any way to Hillary. She really jumped to a lot of conclusions without stopping or thinking.
-Every scene with Keith really felt unnecessary.
-The twist being in the epilogue felt almost like an afterthought. I assumed that we would get closure on the ghosts and Keith, but I was really disappointed that we didn’t get that.
Overall, I gave this book two stars because the author tried to do a difficult concept in the book. While it didn’t really work for me, it might work for others.
