Ghost Eaters
by Clay McLeod Chapman
Want get haunted?
Ghost Eaters by Clay McLeod Chapman is a tale about a woman named Erin (a sympathetic wayward twenty something, trying to figure out her life) who learns her college sweetheart (Silas) died of an overdose - from a drug that allows folks to see the dead. The drug is called Ghost, which is a sort of psilocybin based drug that allows folks to see dead loved ones - and others, who feed off the users' high. Encouraged by her friend, Tobias, Erin takes Ghost in order to overcome her guilt and grief in relation to the death of Silas. Erin partakes in a pill-popping seance and from there, there is no going back for her. Convinced she has reconnected with Silas, her addiction grows and Erin's life spirals out of control. And in the end, she has to choose death or life. Which will it be?
This book is brutal, dark, snarky, sad, and terrifying. There are moments in this book that are truly bonkers (and not for the squeamish). I met Clay McLeod Chapman a few weeks ago and he warned me that this was going be wicked but I wasn't prepared. Ghost Eaters is about loss, addiction, and grim history. But it's also about trying to overcome pain and addiction. Chapman writes: "We need to find a better way to live with our ghosts. Ignoring them gets you nowhere....the only way to keep living is to acknowledge the past."
Ghost Eaters is an obsessive read. You'll get hooked. But fair warning: you'll see dead people.
