I really liked this book. I was a bit concerned about the concept that is basically just made for drama, but it ended up being imbedded in a wonderful character arc.

These characters felt incredibly real. In stories like this, especially in YA, when characters make mistakes or act not perfectly, it can come across as annoying or simply unrealistic. Here, I understood every choice they made, every emotion they had. I really saw them for what they were: teenagers trying to figure out who they are and how to navigate the relationships they’re in. And I loved that.

Alana’s internal dialogue was so interesting and relatable. For instance, her constant lesbian panic about Tal, especially in the beginning of the book, was hilariously relatable. It made it also very easy for the reader to fall in love with Tal alongside Alana. Tal really is a great and interesting character.

I was a bit unsure about Grey and Alana’s friendship at first, but my doubts were dealt with within the story so that made it very satisfying. I love that this book shows that exes can be friends and that friendships can be just as important to you as a romantic relationship.

This is probably one of my favourite portrayals of the sapphic teen experience.
