You can’t always read good books. Sometimes you start a book hoping it’ll be good and it just stinks.

Like that Family Guy meme, this book insists upon itself. I got that inkling with the first sentence (“The first time I saw him, I pitied him”) but I kept reading because I know I am quick to judge and I like being surprised. Well, I was right and if I wasn’t so fussy about finishing books I start (and strong in my love for the beautiful country of Ireland), I wouldn’t have bothered with this one.

I bought this book when I was 19 and desperate for validation from men. I didn’t read it at the time. Now, at the ripe, old age of 22, I can see this book for what it is. So pathetic. I think even at 19, I would have recognise how bad this book is. Another “woe is me” story about terrible people. Like wow, sooo artistic and poignant, the protagonist doesn’t have a name and she likes to get drunk and smoke a lot! Maybe this is more a reflection of my state of mind. I’m tired of women who actively ruin their own lives. Like! Stand up, girl and make healthy life choices! People love you! Lean on the love around you!

I guess this book came out when Fleabag peaked but rarely does the Fleabag-esque story land properly. This book was so shallow in its characters and exploration of women and their relationship to men, love and sex. I liked how you kept learning meaningless shit about the main character when it no longer fucking mattered, like how she always wanted to write a book or she likes the ocean! Another annoying, frustrating case of telling and not showing. As you can tell, I hate read this book.
