The Jane Austen Remedy
by Ruth Wilson
Oh, this was so much more than I expected, and not at all what I expected. It's a lovely look back at a lifetime of reading, and re-reading, Jane Austen, from a 90-year old woman, who is -- beyond just the Austen-related stuff, extraordinarily well-read. I came away with a list of at least 20 books/authors that I need to investigate! But it's also a memoir in its own right, that can teach a lot about how we move through phases in our lives and, hopefully, learn how to give ourselves what we need. I will certainly re-read this at some point. But it also gives me, in my very early 60s, confidence that I may yet have some things to say, and that a life with reading -- and writing -- at its core can be a very good life.
I loved it, although it may not be for everyone. I'd recommend reading all six of Austen's completed novels, for example, before reading this book. Which will be a delight on its own, if you have not yet done that!
