The author intended this to be readable as a standalone. That mostly works although I think it's fair to say that the more you've read of the earlier books the more you'll get out of this one.

I disliked nearly all of the main characters in this book. There's constant conflict between them. The narrator of the audio book really leans into that. If you're into bickering this is your book. For me that swamped the inventiveness that I remember from the earlier books.

This is my least favorite of the author's books in this universe.
