I came to The Color Purple through the Broadway musical and that will always be my favourite medium for this story, but listening to this as an audiobook really made me appreciate it much more than reading the physical book. Alice Walker reads the audiobook herself and she does an amazing job bringing her characters to life. I love how much all of the characters grow across the span of the novel, especially Celie who really comes into her own. Obviously this novel has a lot of heartache, but there is so much joy, too. This is quickly climbing up my list of favourite classics.
