"Everything I had worked for, all my years of study, had been to purchase for myself this one privilege: to see and experience more truths than those given to me by my father, and to use those truths to construct my own mind. I had come to believe that the ability to evaluate many ideas, many histories, many points of view, was at the heart of what it means to self-create. If I yielded now, I would lose more than an argument. I would lose custody of my own mind. This was the price I was being asked to pay, I understood that now. What my father wanted to cast from me wasn’t a demon: it was me."

This was absolutely fascinating. I will forever encourage people to learn about cultures, religions, and upbringings that are different from their own. Tara Westover's memoir is a perfect example of why I think this is so important. You can never really know what people have lived through; the experiences that have made them who they are. From living an isolated, homeschooled life with her conspiracy-theorist family in the remote mountains to obtaining her PhD from Cambridge University, Tara's story is captivating, inspiring, educational, and breathtakingly honest.

This was especially interesting following Kristin Hannah's, “The Great Alone”. One historical fiction, one nonfiction memoir, one set in the Alaskan wilderness in the early 70’s, the other in the mountains of Idaho in the 90’s and 00’s, they shared a startling amount of similarities and difficult themes. A truly fascinating reading experience that further emphasizes my belief in the importance of being open to understanding where others come from and the experiences that shaped them. These are two books together that I haven't stopped thinking about long after I've closed the covers.
